UCLA engineer develops world's smallest microscope for telemedicine use

microscopeA University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) engineer, Aydogan Ozcan, has created the world’s smallest, lightest microscope. The microscope builds on his previously developed imaging technology known as LUCAS (Lensless Ultra-wide-field Cell Monitoring Array platform based on ‘Shadow imaging’) and is specifically designed for use in resource-limited situations (think developing countries, disasters) which are prime for telemedicine use.  About the size and weight of a small egg, it has add ons that are remarkably inexpensive and because images are analyzed by computer, its use requires minimal training.  UCLA Newsroom release.
