A University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) engineer, Aydogan Ozcan, has created the world’s smallest, lightest microscope. The microscope builds on his previously developed imaging technology known as LUCAS (Lensless Ultra-wide-field Cell Monitoring Array platform based on ‘Shadow imaging’) and is specifically designed for use in resource-limited situations (think developing countries, disasters) which are prime for telemedicine use. About the size and weight of a small egg, it has add ons that are remarkably inexpensive and because images are analyzed by computer, its use requires minimal training. UCLA Newsroom release.
