EHR certification moves forward (US)

On the ‘where will the data go’ front for EHRs, the ONC-HIT (Office of the National Coordinator, Health IT) announced the three ONC-Authorized Testing and Certification Bodies under a temporary certification program: the Certification Commission for Health IT, the Drummond Group and InfoGard Laboratories.  They recently started testing the first batch of EHR products under the Stage 1 requirements for ‘meaningful use.’  What is amazing is that the two-year period for hospital/practice adoption for Medicare/Medicaid (state) incentives is nearly 25% over; the clock started with the appointment of the first regional extension centers in April.  Why does it seem that the two-year horizon is receding as we speak?  iHealthBeat article and audio report; white paper includes commentary from executives from leading EHR companies such as ChartLogic and eClinical Works in addition to a certifier.
