Pneumonia detection app wins Microsoft Australia student competition

Four University of Melbourne students won Microsoft Australia’s Imagine Cup with a combination of stethoscope and app called StethoCloud. The plug-in mic captures breathing and the app uploads the recording onto cloud servers. Breathing patterns are analyzed and matched against WHO standards. If the patient has pneumonia, the app then presents an appropriate treatment plan. And the $20 price is right for developing nations, where 98% of childhood pneumonia deaths occur, making the disease the #1 killer of children under 5.
