EHR generated alerts improve doctor performance

An EHR with an integrated alert system significantly improved physician performance and outcomes of patients both with chronic conditions and in preventative care. The alert is in the form of a yellow light for a message at the side of the physician’s PC which then leads to information on a gap in treatment or medication. For instance, pneumonia vaccinations for vulnerable patients (e.g. CHF) increased from 80 to 90%. The year-long study was at Northwestern Medicine in Chicago, where the specially designed EHR was used by 40 primary care physicians whose performance was also measured in quarterly reports.
