Telecare Event: Making Life Easier in North Yorkshire. Conference Report

Organised by North Yorkshire County Council on 25th October 2006 in Harrogate, it was the largest national telecare event run to date by local authority. Over four hundred people attended formal presentations in the conference hall, which gave insight into the Government vision for telecare within the health and social care agenda, as well as national and local telecare developments and plans.

Over seventeen national leading suppliers of different telecare products exhibited, and seventeen North Yorkshire-based organisations gave examples of their services.

Delegates, and a further hundred members if the public, had the opportunity to sample interactive stands ranging from a nutritional demonstration by a celebrity chef, prevention of falls via exercise, and telecare in practice in a ‘demonstration house’.

It was deemed a great success by members of the public and professionals alike, who said that it had been informative, enjoyable and ‘thought provoking’. The event was covered by regional television and was mentioned by local radio stations and press.

The outcome has been stimulation of interest and awareness in telecare across the county in all sectors, and there has been a large increase in the number of referrals for telecare provision.
