Los Angeles Times article on what’s holding doctors back from using email and online video consults: lack of reimbursement and security. Certainly the demand is there; according to the article, a 2009 study of 8,600 U.S. adults estimated that 80 million additional consumers are interested in having online visits with their doctors. And reimbursement may be coming–12 states, including California, have laws on the books requiring health plans to pay for telemedicine services. But the rest on which hope is hinged–the FCC national broadband plan, the HHS grants for three-year telemedicine pilots and the newly-established Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation–will likely push the entire acceptance process into years from now, when it should be here and now.
