81% of US physicians will have smartphones by 2012–up 16 points from 2009–and half of this group will use their devices for administrative functions, continuing education and patient care.  Adoption is driven by physician-oriented apps and content–and is also moving past hospital staff to smaller private practices and into iPhones and Androids from BlackBerry.  The findings are based on a Manhattan Research study of 1900 physicians one year ago–what seems an age ago.  But the author touts it as an opportunity for healthcare marketers–handle with care!   FierceMobileHealthcare.  [Editor’s note–not noted, but I believe a factor–screen resolution and clarity have also improved markedly, a major factor when 1/3 of physicians are over age 55.
