Aetna buys mHealth app–and sees promise (US/UK)

According to the Denver Post, downloads of the free iTriage app for iPhone and Android were over 3 million in the past year.

Aetna has been active in the care model area, particularly in supporting the formation of ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations), generally hospital and/or large physician group practices which bear joint responsibility for both the quality and cost of care delivery to patients.

This announcement follows on the Aetna Foundation’s first UK grant to the The King’s Fund for a study on the most effective closely coordinated health care models for those with chronic diseases. In the NHS system, this would be analogous to the US PCMH (patient-centered medical homes) and ACO models within a focused area of care; the applications to the US system were made very clear in their press release.
